The objective of
blackjack is to get cards in your
hand that add up to 21 or as close as possible without going
over. If you go over 21 or the dealer comes closer to 21
without going over, you lose the hand. Each card has a
different numeric value, which is used to add up the total
value of the hand. Any card from 2 through 10 counts as its face
value, all face cards (Jacks/Queens/Kings) are worth 10 and the Ace can be
worth either 1 or 11, depending on which number gets the
hand closest to 21 without going over. To win the game, your
hand must beat the hand of the dealer's. Players sitting at
the same table need not worry about other players’ hands,
because each player faces up against the dealer. Before any
cards are dealt, you must first place your bet.
After the bets have been placed and the first round of cards
have been dealt it is time to decide whether you want to
’hit’, ’stand’, double down or in some cases ’split’. That's
pretty much it in a nutshell. Learning the essentials of
blackjack takes hardly any time at all. However,
people have spent a long time trying to master all of the
ends and outs of the game. There are many different
strategies and strategy variations that go along with
playing blackjack, the most popular being the Basic Blackjack
Strategy. And while this strategy is "basic" in the sense that
you can use a color-coded card to make use of it,
there are many hand scenarios worth memorizing. As a beginner,
instead of jumping right into learning the Basic Blackjack
Strategy, it is a wiser to
first familiarize yourself with the terms of the game and play by the basic rules.
Keep it simple and just make sure to
get as close to 21 as possible without going over. Once you
learn the rules and get used to the structure of the game, you
should take note of what card combinations are better than
others. By having a sound understanding of the game before
trying to learn the strategy, you will understand why the
basic strategy is set up the way it is. In other words, you
won't have to reference a card every time its your turn to
make a move. It's the same reason why math teacher do not want
their students to become dependent on calculators. On the contrary, by knowing the basis behind
the basic strategy you will not only be more confident in your
own moves, you will have more confidence in the strategy
itself. This is important, because many players abandon the
strategy when times get rough. Instead of seeing it through to
the end, they blame a losing streak on a "defective" strategy.
To get started mastering the game of blackjack, it's necessary
to know the terms: Hit - To ’hit’ means
that you draw another card because you don’t think the cards in your hand come close
enough to 21, or that an additional card will not bust your
hand. Bust - To "bust" is to have a hand go over 21
after being "hit" with an additional card. Stand - To ’stand’
means that you do not want to "hit" because you believe your
hand is close enough to 21 and/or that the dealer's hand has a
good chance of busting. Double Down - To 'double
down' is to double one's bet before a hand will be "hit" one
additional time. Split - The only time that you can ’split’
is if you have two of the exact same numerical cards. If you
choose to do so, the hands are split into two different hands
and played and bet as such. Keep in mind that if you get a
face card or 10 and an Ace it is a Blackjack and you
automatically win. Hard Hand - Hands composed of an
Ace counting as eleven (Aces count as eleven by default,
unless doing so will cause a hand to bust. If such is the
case, an Ace will be counted as one point). Soft Hand
- Hands without an Ace or when an Ace is being count as one
point, as opposed to eleven. Blackjack - Also called
a 'Natural' a blackjack is a hand of twenty-one that cannot
lose.
Overall, blackjack is one of the most popular games in the
casino because it has a relatively low House Edge, can pay off
big, and is a fun and simple game to play. Online casinos
offer several different versions of blackjack, including Vegas
Strip Blackjack, Atlantic City Blackjack, Vegas Downtown,
Bonus Blackjack, European Blackjack, Big Five, Super Fun 21
and Triple 7's Blackjack. The rules for each are basically the
same, and the optimized strategy for each will vary.
