The Basics of Doubling Down ala the Basic Blackjack Strategy

If you have ever played online blackjack before, you are probably familiar with the term "doubling down", whether you have made use of it or not. Some gamblers, who play blackjack according to the universal Basis Blackjack Strategy, use the "double down" action all the time, but may or may not even know the basis behind using it to one's advantage.

Doubling down is an action offered on a two-card blackjack hand, in which a player is allowed to double the amount of one's initial bet in return for one additional card. A risky maneuver if used liberally, doubling down is actually one of the key factors in getting players on the positive side of standard deviation. In other words, it can be the difference in winning substantial profit, coming out even, or losing some of your bankroll to the casino. This is why it's very important to only double down when the mathematical odds of winning with only one more dealt card are at their highest.

If your hand is too high, you will be at risk of busting. If it is too low, you will give the dealer more room to oust your hand.  The value of the dealer's upturned card also plays a part when deciding on whether to double down or not. This being the case, double down is integral to optimizing the basis blackjack strategy.

Since there are more ten value cards than any other value card in blackjack, the best time to double down is when your hand will become very good with the addition of a ten value card. In other words, you should be doubling down the most when your hand has a value of nine, ten or eleven. For hard hands (hands lacking an Ace), always double down on a hand total of eleven, unless the dealer's upturned card is an Ace. Always double down on a hand total of ten, unless the dealer's upturned card is an Ace or ten value card. Since the dealer has a better chance of beating a hand of nineteen than twenty or twenty-one, the only time you should double down with a card total of nine is when the dealer's upturned card is a 3, 4, 5 or 6 (these cards give the dealer the greatest chance of busting).

These are the basics of doubling down, which you should strictly follow without exception. They may not win every hand, however, their accuracy has been verified by extensive computer testing and will pay off.
