online casinos world : : craps

Craps is one of the most fascinating games in the casino. If you have ever seen a crowd gathered around a table accompanied by shouts and cheers, it's very likely to be the craps table. The main reason this is the case is because craps is the only casino game where bettors have an opportunity for hands-on participation, and can be indirectly responsible for whether or not other bettors at the table will win or lose.

It's all about the dice roll. Craps is played with a pair of dice that are rolled by another bettor at the table, a.k.a. the 'shooter'. Everyone placing bets at the table will get a chance to roll the dice, although you can pass them up if you like. Bets are placed on the table according to what your prediction of the next dice roll will be. To score a winning bet, you need to correctly pick the outcome of the roll, whether it is an exact number or in a range of numbers.

One of the worst mistakes beginning craps players make is they do not take the time to master the rules of the game and familiarize themselves with all of the various terms before trying to play or make use of a craps strategy. Some players get so overwhelmed by all the options they oftentimes give up on the game before giving it a fair chance. The ironic thing about craps is there are only a few bets you will need to make in order to maximize a playing strategy that can get the Casinos Edge down lower than all other games in the casino besides video poker and blackjack.

Here are some basic craps pointers to keep in mind:

  • Do not make Proposition Bets - the House Edge is too high for the risk.

  • Do not make Lay Bets - with the 5% commission, you are bettor off making Place Bets or Buy Bets.

  • Use caution making Buy Bets, Place Bets and Field Bets.

  • Make Place Bets in Multiple Denominations - to keep the casino from rounding down, bet increments of $6 on numbers 6 and 8, and increments of $5 on all other numbers.

  • Always make a Free Odds wager when given the opportunity - Free odds wagers pay true odds if you bet even dollar increments on points 5 and 9 and $5 increments on points 6 and 8.

Let's go over some terms and the available bets on the craps table:

Come Out Roll - The very first roll after all bets have been cleared from the table.

Point Number - If the come-out roll is not a 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12 the rolled number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) becomes the point number.

Pass Line Bet - If you place your chips in the area marked Pass Line, and the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the first roll, you win. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 you lose. If it is any other roll, the 'point' is established and this must be rolled again before a 7 in order for your bet to win. If a 7 is rolled before the point number is rolled again, your bet loses.

Come Bet - The rules for the Come Bet are the same as the rules for the Pass Line Bet, except this bet is made after the point is established.

Don't Pass Line Bet - The opposite of a Pass Line bet, if you place your chips in the area marked Don't Pass, and the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the first roll, you lose. If the shooter rolls a 2 or 3 you win. A 12 is a push and any other rolled number will become the established point, which if rolled again before a 7, makes a losing bet.

Don't Come Bet - The opposite of the Come Bet, a Don't Pass bet is the same as the Don't Pass Line Bet, except that the bet cannot be made until the point is established. Once the point is established a 2 or 3 wins on the next roll, a 7 or 11 loses, a 12 is a push and any other rolled number will win if a 7 is rolled before that number is rolled again.

Place Bets - Once the point has been established, a chip can be set in the boxes marked 'win' with corresponding odds below the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. This bet will win if the chosen number is rolled before a 7. Conversely, Place Bets can be made on losing numbers as well. These can be made before the Point number is established, and are placed in the boxes marked 'lose' with corresponding odds (above the lay bet boxes). This bet will win if a 7 is rolled before the chosen number is rolled.

Propositions Bets - Any roll bets marked in a separate area of boxes. These include the Any Seven, Any Craps, Hardway's and One Roll Bets.

Field Bets - A bet for one roll only and wins if a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 is rolled. Any other number rolled is a losing bet. Bets are made by placing chips in the Field Box at any time.

Big 6 and Big 8 - Placed on any roll and is a winner if a 6 or 8 comes out before a 7.

Lay - This bet can be placed at any time, and is made by placing chips in the boxes marked 'lay', corresponding to the number directly underneath the box. The bet wins if a 7 is rolled before the chosen number.

Buy - The Buy bet is the exact opposite of the Lay bet, and is made by placing chips in the boxes marked 'buy', corresponding to the number directly above the box. The buy bet wins if the chosen number is rolled before a 7.

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the layout of a craps table and quiz yourself regarding where you can place your chips for the various bets and what each bet entails. Definitely start out with fun money. When you have the rules down and are comfortable playing, you will then be ready to play craps with real money and make use of a betting strategy.
