taking the odds
In the game of craps, the most important bet you will ever make is the Free
Odds bet. If you are new to craps, pay close attention to this one because
casinos don't actually offer the free odds bet on the craps table like they do
with all other bets. You simply need to know that it exists and how to take
advantage of it when the time warrants.
First of all, a free odds wager is a second bet made on top of a line wager,
which pays true odds if the pass line wager wins. If you recall what a line bet
is, free odds bets are made in favor of the shooter rolling the point number.
Therefore, it can be made on either a Pass Line or Come bet. If the point number
is a 6 or 8, the payoff is 6 to 5 (six ways of rolling a 7 versus five ways of
rolling a 6 or 8). If the point number is 5 or 9, the true odds payoff is 3 to
2. If the free odds bet is on the numbers 4 or 10, the winning payoff is 2 to 1.
If you are playing in an online casino, free odds bets are made by clicking
on the your original pass line bet after the point has been established.
Remember, since free odds is not listed on the craps table, you simply have to
know when and how to make it. If you are playing in a land-based casino, once
the point has been established, simply place your chips immediately behind your
original bet but outside the pass line box. If you are taking free odds on a
come bet, after the dealer has moved your initial bet to the appropriate point
number simply place your free odds bet in the come box and tell the dealer which
number you want the odds to go on.
You might be wondering why casinos would offer this bet if there is no money
to be made off of it (being that it pays true odds). The answer is because the
free odds bet has to be made in conjunction with a line bet, which the casino
does have an advantage on. If the line bet loses, the casino gets both the
pass line and free odds bet. If the bet wins, the casino only pays true odds on
one bet, thus still giving itself an advantage, albeit that advantage is nearly
cut in half. For example, the Casinos Edge on a regular pass line bet is about
1.414%. That same bet with free odds has a Casinos Edge of only about .8%. You
can see why this is an advantageous bet to make.
In our next craps tip, we will go into more detail about the sums of bets and
their relation to payoffs. Depending on the point number, winning bets can
return whole dollars and some change. What some players do not know is that the
casinos will round down the payoff if there is change involved. This makes a
huge difference in the Casinos Edge, and is something worth taking a closer look
at.
