Online Horserace Betting in Up and Running in
New York State

It might appear hypocritical to most, but the New York horseracing industry
certainly isn't complaining about online thoroughbred betting in the State of
New York. Starting last week, New York residents can legally place bets over the
internet on a new website for Yonkers Raceway. Thanks to the digital cable and
simulcasting services of Los Angeles based TVG Network, New Yorkers will now be
able to open personal accounts and place real money wagers on a large variety of
horse races.
Part of TVG's services include race replays, free handicapping information,
expert picks and real-time news on horses, trainers, jockeys - Basically,
everything that could possible influence the outcome of a race. There is no
doubt the service will be a major benefit to both bettors and racetracks in New
York, which is the largest pari-mutuel wagering State in the U.S. It is also
expected to expand to other raceways, as a campaign to market TVG throughout New
York is expected to begin before the year's end.
TVG's online betting platform was approved by the New York State Racing and
Wagering Board on October 26, which stemmed from an agreement back in June
between Yonkers Raceway and the TVG Network. The real seed of it all, however,
is the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which to somebody who
has never heard of the UIGEA, probably sounds ironic. That's because the UIGEA
gives carveouts to online thoroughbred betting, as well as lotteries and fantasy
sports. All other forms of internet gambling, including online casinos are
prohibited, which is precisely why the UIGEA is widely seen as a biased,
hypocritical and ineffective bill.
Considering the majority of U.S. citizens
strongly disagree with the UIGEA (many of whom are up in arms, it's only a
matter of time before the UIGEA's online gambling prohibition is overturned. But
until then, you can be the New York horseracing industry will be making the most
of it.
